Full Version: The important epoch mods.

Hey all,

Reading back on forums, people adding 6 cells, and speculating some silly mods that were more than likely never even completed, it made me wonder if it was a good idea to straighten things out. I'd like everyone to recommend epoch modifications, that THEY have tried, not that others have told them, that they personally have experience with.[/B] May sound a little harsh, but it's true and fair.

I call upon the epoch experts here, my epoch knowlage is very limited, and is mainly from reading topics of people like ph2t,LBRC,OTP and lot's of others.

SO

Let's begin the list shall we ?

I'll start with a mod I completed today, that made my epoch smooth and somewhat faster, due to less friction, not much, but enough to tell.

Greasing the diff.....

I took my wheels off, removed the diff, and squeezed off the retainer, Cleared out the little hairball inside, and greased up the diff with some light grease, I greased it pretty heavy, slid the diff back together without the retainer, and span it around for a while.

Next I wiped off a little of the excess grease, popped the retainer back on, wiped the outside of the diff clean, and put a minute dab of grease on the pinion.
Finally - put back together, and kept the retainer in place with a tiny dab of CA glue on the very end of the retainer.

Voila! my diff was smoother than ever, I think the grease limited the slip slightly, giving more power to the wheels, it works perfectly while turning, and I'm getting more traction now.

It's great how much, simple, free mod's can do!

I found a tip by ph2t, allthough not having personal experience of this mod, it's been "OK'ed" by both Ph2t and LBRC, and quite frankly they don't speculate.

you can use mini-z front suspension springs no sweats on Epochs. In fact, you open yourself up to a range of finer tuning since mini-z spring sets usually come in packs of three diff strengths.

you will find them stiffer too, Aantoin.

I can also account for the soft tires available, they are perfect for racing on hardwood floors.

Xmod springs fit well in the back of an epoch, and are a direct replacement. I use a yellow spring, stretched slghtly, I found blue too stiff, and red too soft, allthough I'm yet to try stock. wink.gif

So who's next ? wink.gif
LBRC
Removable battery mod, requires soldering skills, but it’s hands down my favorite Epoch mod since it allows you to use a whole range of different interchangeable battery packs from the stock three cell all the way up to a 400mAh 3.7 volt LiPo pack.

Sorry the photo’s use to have instructions but I accidentally deleted them playing around with the gallery.

Not exactly mods but the most important thing to know how to do for Epoch longevity and racing enjoyment is disassemble the diff, and front hubs to clean them and correctly reassemble them as needed. Not too often because that will screw them up but definitely when lint and hair is interfering with performance. For the diffs do not remove the crimp bead, simply push the whole assembly back away from the bead and it will all come apart.

Ahh I didn't realise about the crimp bead, well I have part of a diff with a bearing an E-clip, so I ended up using that, allthough the diff isn't working properly, I need to get some spacers for the e-clip to get a good mesh.

I have yet to attempt the R&R mod, I managed to perform one on my DG master with success, but I think I'll dive into an epoch once I've ordered some more cells. wink.gif
