I was lookin at atomicsnobs videos and i saw this video. I wanna know what kind of surface that is. I wanna make a track like that cuz it looks like mini-z AWD's perform nicly on it. Another track idea i had was felt. THeres some felt with adhesive backing at wally world that i've used before. It works great on wood. I might use that or whatever this is.

Thanks in advance!
baratacus
its Ozite. a microfiber carpet that doesn't produce lint. Ususally the track has two different piles. one taller and one shorter. The taller side is used for larger scale cars and trucks while the short side is necessary for small and micro scale cars. I think bonzermat is still in buisness and they produce nice roll up tracks with velcro walls that you can use to lay out different configurations.

thanks man! I'll look that stuff up!

Looks like a great track surface. Has anyone here used it?

EDIT: ouch, thats kinda a little expensive.... will felt work just the same??

Felt? I think felt creates those little "hairs" you get when you pull on the stuff to hard. Plus, felt is very strechable so it would move around when you drove on it.

not felt with adhesive backing. Its like a big sticker that has felt on one side. Is there any way to get rid of the hairs (shave them? laugh.gif )

Is there any paint for plywood that has the same good balance of drifting and grip? I heard chalkboard paint is good but mostly for grip....

I bet if you took plywood, sanded it really smooth, then took some good quality clear coat spray paint and sprayed it on there you could make the car break traction, but I don't know, I never tried it.

I kinda want some grip as well.....
Felt wouldnt be that bad. I'll just take off the stuff that gathered on the tires after each race. I'ts not harmfull to take off the tires and take off the felt strands, is it?

Is there any place where i can ozite cheap? (like, being able to make the track in the video for around 50$ with no barriers) I really wanna make a track outta that stuff....

Yo dude. Not producing the roll-out mat anymore. Moved onto our tile based set. Been selling really well in the UK so far, looking to move into USA this year with a NASCAR race set.

Here is a video showing the new setup.

well theres the word on the bonzermat. looking forward to seeing some banked oval tracks!

the ozite if you search for it, you can get it by the yard from places that sell fabric and also speaker manufacturers use it to cover their equipment. Felt will tangle under your wheels fast. Pulling off the tires stretches the rubber and if you do it too often it will make the tires loose and sloppy. Pulling off the axels will eventually wear out the clips that hold the axels in. Race on something that won't require constant maintenance to drive on. Microfiber is the best material, its lint free and very durable. You can also use tar paper. It's cheap as heck and provides a grippy surface. If you use hard tires on it you can get some slide out of it, but not great for drifting.

Wow, even the place you linked me to had really expensive ozite. I'll look around my local capet and fabric shops for some ozite....

I see how felt can be bad...
I might still want to do it though, jut because of the price biggrin.gif

yeah the stuff isn't cheap, you might find some outdoor carpet that would work for you. Low pile synthetic material with a high density.. thats what you wan't.
saturnv7890
waht about the pool table stuff? Is that cheap and low matenneced? That wouldnt be too bad of a track material. Either i could buy pool table stuff or make one of zzapultimates new track idea and put it on a pool table to race zzse's tongue.gif

That would be awesome to have races every weekend at a local place with a pool table....

zzapultimate
Not a bad idea. Maybe like a bowling alley or arcade. You could ask the owner of the buisness for permission. Then you could charge racers to race and have a prize at the end for the winner. Part of the admission could go to the owner of the buisness and the rest to the prize.
saturnv7890
thats just an idea though.. not much of a reality....
maybe you should try to get a group together since your the one with the track barriers....

I had another idea, i could cut 2'x2' squares out of tar payper and them make some sorta barrier to put on the sides. I could make some corner peices and straights and whatnot. Kinda like lakeshore's foam track sections except out of tar paper. Then i could put velcro on the bottom of them and have little velcro straps that hold the peices together. Good idea, is it not?

i love visuals...

EDIT: About how much is a peice of tar paper that covers at least 200 square feet gonna cost me?

EDIT: I thought of an idea for the barriers. Its perfect in every way except that it will take alot of work and time to make. If anyone makes this, they are my god....

Since no one has fed-back, I make this one last post for a little while: If you are making that, try using rubber hose (I think you already have) It's a lot easier to position and make (just go to a hardware store)

no i was just thinking of a wild thing to make barriers out of. I'm not gonna make that barrier. I'm gonna use the plastic molding for sheetrock...

hey i htink the ozite stuff your talking about you can find at car audio places for really cheap. i built my own sub box and covered it in the stuff they use and they use it in like interior carpeting in the trunks of cars as well. i picked up 5 yards long by 2 yards wide for like 15 bux i think. real cheap if you go to the right place.
baratacus
it comes in different grades. You have to make sure you get the stuff that is really flat, almost like felt but less fuzzy.
